It was in a small card shop amongst many others. Sunday afternoon. Outside it was raining, not too heavily, but enough to spread the sleepy mode around.
There were a couple, a boy and a girl, giggling in between conversations. Couldn't make out what they say, but the giggles were loud enough. In fact there were more giggles than any word exchanged. Not that I was eavesdropping, but when you're in a quiet room, even footsteps were too loud to go unnoticed.
There was an old man. Take that. A middle-aged man. In a business suit and holding a brief case. Sunday afternoon and holding a briefcase in suit. Hmm. Screening cards in the children section he was. Ahh, that was sweet. Maybe her daughter's birthday was coming. Ah..
Took a card for mama's birthday which was in a week's time. There was no way this card would arrive on time, but all the same, a thought is a thought however late it reaches the person concerned.
Went to the check-out till. No-one there. Oh come on, I had work to do. A lady came and checked it out. Just when we wanted to exchange goods and money, the guy in suit came up.
"Err, excuse me, do you know which one's for the girl? Is it the one with a single?"
He wasn't looking at me, so of course it was directed to the tiller. So I waited for my card. She was still holding it, although I gave the exact amount. Should I just take it and leave? One second. Two..... Seven seconds gone. The lady gave it a thought although it looked like more than one to me. I knew this cos she had that 'thinking face' you have when you are actually thinking. Go figure.
I couldn't stand this.
"The one with the double."
Both looked at me. Take that, all of them looked at me, including the giggling couple who had just came into the scene.
"The one with the double is for the girl."
"Oh, thanks."
Isn't there any clue in the card saying which one's for whom? I know for sure you can't be wrong with mothers' and fathers' day cards!
